Diversity and Inclusion Statement

United Way of Volusia/Flagler County is committed to diversity as an institutionalized way of doing business to fully utilize the talents of our volunteers, staff and agencies and to create an excellent organization that everyone views as their own strong community resource to get things done. Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of what it means to LIVE UNITED and are fundamental to achieving our mission and impacting goals in education, income and health.

Valuing diversity includes respecting and appreciating each person’s race, color, religion, creed, gender, nationality, language differences, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical, mental and developmental abilities, age, socioeconomic status, veteran status, parental status and the perspectives of each individual shaped by their nation, culture and experiences. We seek diversity through active inclusion and recruitment of board members, staff, and volunteers.

Our organization is committed to being a health and human service leader that meets the needs of our diverse community. Our board, staff, and volunteers should reflect the community we serve in order to understand and respond quickly to the changing needs of our community. If we lack representation at the volunteer, staff or agency levels in any defined segment, we deny ourselves valuable access to (1) critical strategies to help meet measurable objectives, (2) skilled volunteers, (3) in-kind resources and dollars outside the campaign, (4) the opportunity to strategically focus our investments on critical areas, and (5) non-traditional donors.

Ultimately, it is our goal to create a culture in which diversity is integrated into every aspect of our United Way’s operation. Diversity will be recognized as a critical success factor, become a natural part of how we function, and will serve as a model for all organizations in the community.

A review of this policy and its implementation will be made at least once every three years by a diverse committee comprised of both board members and non-board members.

The affairs of United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties is voted on by the board members of the organization. All board members are volunteers and each may serve up to two (2) three-year terms. The board of directors is solely responsible for adoption of short-and long-range goals, the administrative budget, allocations of United Way funds, agency admissions and terminations, personal contracts with the president, and other contractual or legal commitments of the Corporation. The board employs a non-voting president, who, in turn, employs other professional and clerical staff within the constraints of the board-approved annual budget.  See our current Board of Directors list.
